Jen Stark

Had a chance to stop by the Pulse Art Fair today and visit with Jen Stark at the Show and Tell Gallery booth.

Her work is amazingly detailed layered cut outs from wood and paper, that are labored, intricate and often take over a month to complete. The work puts you into a hypnotic state and have a kaleidoscope effect with moving parts and animation. We were lucky to be introduced to Jen through Alvaro Ilizarbe, her Miami counterpart and companion, at his HVW8 Gallery opening last year.

Here’s small video and photos from today. Thank you Cooper Cole/Show and Tell.

Got to meet the President last night at a DNC fundraiser at the Beverly Hilton. Snapped a few picks of Obama, Earth, Wind and Fire, Jennifer Hudson along with a little of the action around the President. Must say it was pretty inspiring to shake his hand!

KAWS and effect

Arguably the biggest name in art/streetwear today KAWS had two massive openings this past Fri/Sat in LA. First a curated show at Royal T, “I Can’t Feel My Face” and then a solo show at Honor Fraser. Here are few sh**ty photos of the first (before the iPhone), and then sans the second, better left to blogs.

LALA!

childhood Saturday Mornings

Maybe showing my age — and that I have some free time, but when I was I kid Saturday mornings was the shizz. Wake up at 7-8am, get a bowl of cereal and sit for hours …. pre-computer, vcr, dvd, internet … this was it ! After try to draw muscles and decipher what is good and bad …. and accept that in 1994 the world would be destroyed! Here are a few of the classics — hand drawn fonts and all.

I would swim like Tarzan. The later Tarzan, the ape man pictorial was also a fond memory!

Was intense as a kid! The intro used to trip me out about what would happen in “1994”.

Superfriends — teamwork!

Even though living in Canada I would always sit and watch the Schoolhouse rock between episodes.

and the classic Conjunction Junction!

Ok I watched the OG smurfs …. collected them too

… and always room for some Canadian live action — Hammy Hamster in the diving bell again …. we all had/wanted hamsters.

… and maybe after the cartoons a classic Sinbad movie would be on ….

NYE HOUSE PARTY 2008

A few flicks from the NYE party at the EgoTrip house in the Hollywood Hills, where Alfred Hawkins, J-Logic, B+, Coleman, Jamie Strong, Haycock, Kutmah, Pubes and Ty G held it down for the party people. Big Ups to the Ego Trip Crew – Brent Rollins and Gabe along with Joy for hosting a wild night — and a voodoo curse to the foolio who stole Ty G’s laptop!

Happy NEW YEAR from HVW8 in 2008.

Seattle Times

This past Saturday Ty G was painting with Suntzu Sound and DJ Riz at the baltic Room in Seattle. Lot’s of fun!!! Big ups to the Vancouver Canucks who made the drive down to snuggle up with Shawn Kemp.

LA Lately and Warhol’s Children

Got a major treat last night with Mark de Clive Lowe and Landy Shores (from Ramp) doing a live set of Daylight at the Mountain Bar in Los Angeles, on their Free Soul Sessions Tour. Aloe and Blu were in the house – watch out for those cats! On Wednesday from DJ Nuts from San Paulo held it down at barcade playing the mad brazil styles, records you’ll never find.

Also lot’s of Art Talk with the “Warhol’s Children” article — wish I was a famous artist! See the New York story and Charlie Finch’s commentary below.
