Tom Wesselmann was known as the “pleasure painter”. I first encountered his art in the pages of Avante-Garge Magazine . Simple clean pop graphic imagery, with a sense of humor … and some sexiness! have a look …..
Two of my favorite designers from art school were Alexander Rodchenko and El Lissitzky.
They were part of the Construct movement of Russia in the early 1900’s. They rejected art for art’s sake, and put their art into a social context. Constructivism was the parent of the modernist movement that later developed at the bauhaus, and the great grandfather for a lot of what you see today. A huge influence.

After the last post thought I’d sneak a few photos of Sister Corita’s prints from the amazing collection at Immaculate Heart College Art Department. All religion isn’t bad. Prints circa 1968.
Before Kehinde Wiley there was Barkley L. Hendricks.
Maybe best known for his Marvin Gaye artwork for I Want You, collaborations with Bill Withers and sketching out the character JJ Walker in Good Times, Ernie Barnes was a great American painter.

Went to a next level listening party of Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak last night. This was a collaboration between Kanye and artist Vanessa Beecroft, produced by Kanye’s creative man, Willo Perron. It started off with everyone being lead from a waiting room to the second level of a parkcade type structure ( the unfinished new Ace Gallery), where the artist had about 40 women standing naked in a heart-shaped formation. There was a large, diffused lighting screen behind the women that would change in synch with Kanye’s new album tracks. Pretty cool! It was kind of a surreal environment to be watching/listening to this while hip hop celebrities (jay-z, mos, rick ross) and curators (getty) intermingled ….. kind of on a Warhol factory type vibe. Wasn’t a place to take photos (I’m sure they will be online soon) but did kind of remind me of an Yves Klein “happening” from the late 60’s.
