Perspective Tyler Gibney of HVW8 Gallery
Artist and gallerist Tyler Gibney spoke to VSCO at his Los Angeles gallery HVW8 about the exhibition “Anxiety” (Nov 4 – Dec 16), a group show he curated with Laura Watters that sought to address “the unnerving tension of the strange climate of present day.” The theme of the show would prove to be even more relevant as the US and the world reacted to the new era that was ushered in on November 8th. Following the election, works in the show resonated with further levels of meaning — Cali Thornhill DeWitt’s opioids and Earths installation, Brendan Lynch’s tribute tee to Eric Garner (which the artist had worn across a two-year span), and Gibney’s own “Gun America” mural painted large on the side of the building. Gibney has a history of organizing work that intersects with politics and social issues, most notably, “The Art of a Political Revolution — Artists for Bernie Sanders” earlier in 2016. And in this vignette, Gibney offers his views on the gallery’s role, and responsibility, in providing the needed context for the crucial position that artists play in offering perspectives on the pressing issues of our times.

Einhundert teamed up with Native Teenage and a bunch of young talented local photographers to showcase a total of 100 sides to the city in a photo zine called ‘Diversity And Conformity’. 10 images by 10 artists – Einhundert views.
Join Native Teenage, adidas and us at HVW8 Gallery this Friday for our exhibition opening and Zine launch! Conplimentary drinks and food will be provided by Fechtner, plus Lee Stuart, Kristieyana and Nico Adomako on the Cdjs.
About the zine:
Diversity And Conformity. Two unstable magnitudes that bind a visual-driven culture. While the motivation on the concatenation of the following 100 pictures is to capture a indefinable collection of visual moments that have drawn the attention from 10 different individuals and photographers, the focus lies on the places they have been at the specific time this idea was born. By now this is Berlin.
Diversity and conformity. Effect or affect? How are you, the viewer, affected by what you see? What is the effect? Which image are you attracted to the most? What are you drawn to and why is this appealing to you?
Diversity and conformity. Subjective views turned into an objective analogue experience. Turn the pages, turn it around, close it, open it again and repeat. Its purpose is not to explain a process. It’s not to explain a cause. It’s a feeling that we try to envision, a feeling we try to evoke in the first instance and reproduce with each individual experience. Something tangible.

iGNANT magazine and HVW8 Gallery collaborate on a group exhibition with photographers from around the globe, playing with the subject “All Inclusive“. Sometimes critical, often sarcastic yet humorous, their works deal with vacationing and the stereotypical images that one might think of hearing the term “All Inclusive“. The artists reveal a shady side of maximum recreation on a cheap basis, showing us how tourists in uence the image of a city or landscape, or simply spark interest with an easy-going aesthetic. In a time where everyone is striving for ultimate fun and personal development, “All Inclusive“ is the analogy for our attitude of self-management and self-enhancement.

Karl Hab – Basketball Aerial Shots of LA
Young Parisian photographer Karl Hab has long had an obsession with Los Angeles and aerial photography. His first book, Window Seat Please, was a dreamy zine shot entirely out of the window of planes crossing the Atlantic, then his second book, 24H Los Angeles was a more literal exploration of LA.
In his latest project, Karl has shot LA’s most colourful, graphic basketball courts from a two-seater helicopter. “It was a project in a project,” he says of the three-year project. “When I was shooting pictures for 24h Los Angeles I found these nuggets, so I decided to shoot more courts last summer while I was in LA.”

LISA LEONE’S ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHS IN FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION IN GERMANY

BERLIN — HVW8 Gallery Berlin presents How You Like Me Now?, a solo exhibition from photographer Lisa Leone. The show highlights the final period before hip-hop’s mainstream cultural influence and global expansion. These rarely exhibited photographs are both a documentation and personal exploration of the grit, audacity and raw creative spirit that has become the aesthetic of 80’s and 90’s hip-hop, its innovators, and the often harsh realism that fueled it.
Born in the Bronx and raised throughout New York City, Leone found herself in a unique position in the late 80’s to early 90’s to capture a behind-the-scenes perspective on the incomparable spirit of collaboration that sparked hip-hop’s early artistic triumphs.
“To see a young Nas in the studio with Q-Tip, Premier and Large Professor was not only inspiring, it is the decisive moment,” Leone recalls of the studio recording sessions of Nas’ landmark debut album Illmatic. Her photos from these recording sessions appear to be the only existing visual documentation of this iconic moment.
The exhibition is also a haunting portrait of the city itself, the setting for a diverse cast of characters trying to find acceptance, acknowledgment and community, captured at the tipping point between the devastation of the 70’s and the rebirth of the 90’s. Leone captures the spirit of an era when a city, fresh cultural voices, and a group of young artists all began to turn toward the future.
How You Like Me Now? captures nascent moments from the hip-hop generation’s biggest stars: Lauryn Hill, KRS-One, Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Nas, Biggie, Rosie Perez, The Roots, Queen Latifah, Snoop and many others.
The exhibition at HVW8 Gallery Berlin will feature unique presentations of these timeless images, giving viewers a rare glimpse to a time that will never be what it was.

About Lisa Leone
Bronx born Lisa Leone began her career as a photographer shooting musicians and personalities for British Vogue and VIBE. She transitioned to cinematography, shooting music videos for artists such as TLC, D’Angelo and The Brand New Heavies.
A few years later, Lisa began work on Stanley Kubrick’s last film “Eyes Wide Shut”, where Kubrick became her mentor. “Exactly” was Leone’s debut film as writer, director and cinematographer, with Rosie Perez (Fearless) and Sarita Choudhury (Homeland). Other films she shot and co-directed include the acclaimed documentary “Just For Kicks” and “Woinshet” with Marisa Tomei.
In May 2012 her solo photography show, Then, opened at HVW8 Art +Design Gallery in Los Angeles. The show chronicles the beginnings of NYC hip-hop in the 80’s/90’s. The show traveled to Milan’s Galleria Patricia Armocida and The Andenken Gallery in Amsterdam.
In September 2014 her solo exhibit, Here I Am, opened at The Bronx Museum. It was accompanied with a book, of the same title, published by Minor Matters Books.
2016 brought Lisa to Dubai for a solo exhibit and to Los Angeles for a group show at the Leica Gallery.
Lisa serves as Vice President of Artistic Programs for the National YoungArts Foundation.

JERRY HSU – (SECONDARY) PASSION
As I was waiting in front of the HVW8 Gallery in Berlin to meet Jerry Hsu for the first time in my life, I again went over the notes I had written on a rumpled piece of paper. I knew I had to ask the right questions in order to get a deeper impression of who Jerry is and how his mind functions. It began to rain and I had to take cover inside of the gallery, where some of Jerry’s expressive photos had already been hung up on the white walls, while others still were packed in boxes. While looking around, I felt like the whole room was filled with love, while also charged with related but at the same time totally opposite feelings of sadness, and even hints of quiet pain. On one side of the gallery, an adorable naked girl was portrayed sitting in a tub, while on the other side, a man on a lonely street was captured throwing away a fresh bunch of flowers into a trash can while walking by. Somehow Jerry seems to have an eye for quiet and mundane scenes that, on a closer inspection, depict a much deeper theme than what might appear at first glance.

LOS ANGELES — HVW8 Gallery, in collaboration with Gil Veni Vici, presents East Side Story, a multidisciplinary art exhibition about the north easternmost neighborhood in Los Angeles through the perspective of Gil Veni Vici. Born and raised in El Sereno, Gil shares a glimpse into his personal lifestyle by featuring 14 artists and tasking them with creating a piece of work that embodies the feel and culture of East Los Angeles. This group of artists, which includes emerging and established photographers, will payhomage to the Latin landmark and community-driven culture that this neighborhood represents. The featured photographs are taken in East L.A., with Gil acting as both the creative director and the the main focal point of the work, celebrating his Mexican- American heritage. These portraits speak to Gil’s unwavering respect for the nuances of his roots and daily reality. In a global art climate obsessed with naming what L.A. is and isn’t, Gil demonstrates what L.A. means to him simply by nature of being.
Entering the space, one will feel as if they are stepping into a familiar East L.A. party or celebration scene, including a layered cake with pillars and colorful lighting alongside the photographs exhibited. The entire presentation explores the idea of a collective neighborhood and its deep-rooted traditions. The exhibition will also feature a large-scale installation and performance piece in the form of a poker game sequence. The characters depicted include opposing gangsters, a recontextualized childhood image of a surreal experience. In this dream state, confirmed by the mermaid character playing the dealer, one can imagine a collapsed encounter of different subcultures in a moment full of whimsical surrealism. A theatrical meeting of minds gathered to dramatize moments from Gil’s own childhood, where memories have now become both unbelievable truths and familiar fantasies. The viewer is invited to step inside an intimate storyline that is stopped in time and representative of Gil’s upbringing.
The opening will feature local food by Escuela Taqueria and drinks provided by Sean B of Serve Mobile Bars. Bradley Soileau, AUSTO, and Allie Teliz will be spinning oldies and hip-hop, dirtbikes and four wheelers will be on display, along with a piñata and other Mexican-American traditions. A limited edition release of Gil’s clothing line entitled 50K will also be available for purchase, alongside a zine and other takeaway items.
