Yves Klien, 808’s & Heartbreak & naked women
Went to a next level listening party of Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak last night. This was a collaboration between Kanye and artist Vanessa Beecroft, produced by Kanye’s creative man, Willo Perron. It started off with everyone being lead from a waiting room to the second level of a parkcade type structure ( the unfinished new Ace Gallery), where the artist had about 40 women standing naked in a heart-shaped formation. There was a large, diffused lighting screen behind the women that would change in synch with Kanye’s new album tracks. Pretty cool! It was kind of a surreal environment to be watching/listening to this while hip hop celebrities (jay-z, mos, rick ross) and curators (getty) intermingled ….. kind of on a Warhol factory type vibe. Wasn’t a place to take photos (I’m sure they will be online soon) but did kind of remind me of an Yves Klein “happening” from the late 60’s.
The Hump West Coast
New West Coast mixtape from our NY friends DJ Lindsey and Myles. Their weekly party, the Hump, features flyer artwork from Brooklyn based graphic designer Grotesk. Look for Grotesk and the Hump to come to the HVW8 Gallery in the upcoming year.

Princeton and NY Times columnist Paul Krugman just won the Nobel Economics prize.
HVW8 has always been a fan of Paul Krugman and his views. We have included him in our Political Minded shows since 2004. Respect where respect is due.

Africa B
Original HVW8 member Brian A, aka Sleepy B, is working towards an exhibition based on his recent travels to Benin, Africa. Here are a few words and photos from the artist:
“Much too burned out to pack myself, running on 2 hrs sleep and failing reserves of nervous adrenaline, I made a furious break for the airport in full evening rush-hour traffic; A perfect way to say goodbye to the bustling metropolis of Montreal before my voyage into ‘the birthplace of voodoo’. ‘The doorway to the South’ for the Europeans, certainly the ‘Porte de non-retour’ for the slaves bound from the colonies to the occident, I was heading to the Republic of Benin, on the west coast of Africa.”
Photos and text from a young Canadian’s journey to the Motherland: Discovery, displacement, a whirlwind love affair and an unexpected twist forcing him to confront the wide world outside his home and his place within it. A realization that voodoo is not intangible, it lives in the everyday interactions between people, and in the basic motivation that drives them to do sometimes unimagineable and incomprehensible things.
Look out for an exhibition of Brian’s artwork at the HVW8 Gallery in 2009.

Strategic Synchronicity – Futura
Checked out futura’s opening last night at the pop up Mad Krunk space in Downtown Los Angeles. The paintings looked amazing – I believe created right on site or at the framers and most of the pieces sold (30 – 75k).
A la Damian Hirst’s recent pop up – the show is open for 3 days.
