‘Paris De Noche’ World Premiere & Group Climate Listening Party

‘For the longest time I wanted to produce a skate video with an original soundtrack. Although not an entirely new idea, I wanted to try my hand at creating one myself. I believed in @n.rollings vision and execution in the way that he had always made skate videos and asked him if we should make one with our friends in which he obliged. We filmed extensively in NY, Philly, LA & Paris throughout 2023. This year was spent creating the music in which I am happy to finally announce with immense gratitude that @seedsofyaris and friends have provided the audio landscape for this project. Come join us this Tuesday at @hvw8gallery .’ – Sagen Lockhart

Nicer Tuesdays: Olimpia Zagnoli

Olimpia Zagnoli takes us on an illustrated trip through 80s Italy at Nicer Tuesdays

“I don’t remember when I began drawing exactly but it was a long time ago”, explained illustrator Olimpia Zagnoli, opening the evening at Nicer Tuesdays September. Joining us from her home of Milan, the beloved illustrator spoke through the numerous forms her illustrative work can take, from illustrated plates and pillows to collaborations with fashion brands to children’s books.

However, Olimpia’s talk explained the importance of personal work, explaining how crafting her own practice is always on her mind, particularly when she gets to consider how her work can infiltrate a space when exhibited,

Her most recent exhibition, Cuore di Panna in Los Angeles, saw Olimpia illustrate visuals that were close to home. Taking inspiration from her childhood in 80s Italy, Olimpia illustrated the popping high colour of it all, from fizzy drink packaging to cafe signs. The result was a series that jumps off the page, screen and in the exhibition context, the wall too. It’s a guilty pleasure series, and one that suits the illustrator’s work perfectly, both sensual and overly sweet at the same time.

Beloved Italian illustrator Olimpia Zagnoli talks us through one of her most recent projects, Cuore di Panna: a personal and cultural interpretation of 80s Italy.

Under the Glass, HVW8’s Creative Class

Interview/text from Honeyeecom.us

Miami Art Week had a lot of parties, a lot of looks and a lot of corporate sponsors trying to get in on the art scene.

That’s why HVW8 Gallery’s Creative Class stood out to our team. Held outside of the Miami Beach vicinity, they presented five artists Atiba Jefferson, Kilo Kish, Lisa Leone, Ines Longevial and Brian Lotti at their three day exhibition at Miami’s historic, Jewel Box. The standout feature all five artists: all five had their first shows with HVW8.

Second to that, the team worked with adidas and Sonos, in a way that was subtle, including the brand as patron of the arts and not some culture vulture (which we witnessed plenty of throughout our time in Miami).

We talked with Tyler Gibney, one of HVW8’s founders, about Miami and about their mission with HVW8.

Kilo Kish ‘Fullfillment’ Video – HVW8 Gallery

Article from Vogue

Kilo Kish may be better known for wearing oversize suits than frilly dresses, but her new interactive video project for “Fulfillment,” a standout from last year’s Reflections in Real Time, proves that the rapper can pull off menswear staples and full-on gowns equally well.

Kish shared a new website designed by Empire Taste that allows the viewer to flip between four different security camera feeds of HVW8 gallery in Los Angeles. Each one depicts a different angle of Kish dancing and singing in a vintage pink gown, belted with a black ribbon that matches her long satiny gloves. HVW8 is currently housing an installation by Kish, who is also a visual artist. Of the video’s voyeuristic framing, Kish says that “watching security footage of someone alone in a big white box asks the question, ‘How do we find and define fulfillment in our digital society?’ ” So ponder the social behaviors of our current technological moment and admire Kish’s vintage pink gown by watching the clip below, or head to the website to take it in from every point of view.

Perspective Tyler Gibney of HVW8 Gallery

Artist and gallerist Tyler Gibney spoke to VSCO at his Los Angeles gallery HVW8 about the exhibition “Anxiety” (Nov 4 – Dec 16), a group show he curated with Laura Watters that sought to address “the unnerving tension of the strange climate of present day.” The theme of the show would prove to be even more relevant as the US and the world reacted to the new era that was ushered in on November 8th. Following the election, works in the show resonated with further levels of meaning — Cali Thornhill DeWitt’s opioids and Earths installation, Brendan Lynch’s tribute tee to Eric Garner (which the artist had worn across a two-year span), and Gibney’s own “Gun America” mural painted large on the side of the building. Gibney has a history of organizing work that intersects with politics and social issues, most notably, “The Art of a Political Revolution — Artists for Bernie Sanders” earlier in 2016. And in this vignette, Gibney offers his views on the gallery’s role, and responsibility, in providing the needed context for the crucial position that artists play in offering perspectives on the pressing issues of our times.

Brian Lotti: Echo Park on Nowness

New feature on Nowness

Brian Lotti: Echo Park
Visionary skate filmmaker Jacob Rosenberg captures the artist’s LA story

It is no surprise that American artist Brian Lotti’s work takes in inner-city neighborhoods, alleyways, vistas and purposefully-striding figures – the elements inherent to the urban landscape with which his years as a professional street skateboarder made him so intimately familiar.

After a successful career in the sport (he is credited as being one of the originators of technical street skating), the Okinawa-born Lotti studied art at San Francisco State University, after which he returned to Southern California.

Directed by renowned skate director Jacob Rosenberg – responsible for the pioneering Plan B films Questionable and Virtual Reality, and whom Lotti first met 27 years ago at a skateboard camp in Santa Clara – today’s profile follows the painter as he prepares for his first solo exhibition at HVW8, a collection of oils, color studies and monotypes that captures his home base in Los Angeles’s Echo Park with bold impressionistic strokes and vivid colors that bring to mind Cezanne’s Provençal landscapes.

Echo Park by Brian Lotti at HVW8 gallery, Los Angeles runs to August 2.

JJJJound ‘Correspondence’ video

Video with Justin R. Saunders (JJJJound) discussing his ‘Correspondence ‘ exhibition at HVW8 Gallery

JJJJound is a wordless blog by Justin R. Saunders. Originally a mood board shared with friends, it has since become a global mainstay and daily web visit for designers, tastemakers and fans alike.

One of those friends is Claudio Marzano, whose creative partnership with Saunders dates back to 1993; twenty years over which their obsessive consumption of visual culture has shifted from print to screen, in step with the rise of the Internet.

Countless emails containing nothing more than images taken from the world wide web were sent between them over that period.

CORRESPONDENCE is an exhibition of recent emails, reproduced as 4′ x 6′ oil paintings, by commercial artists offering “competitive labor costs” from the Wushipu Oil Painting Village in Xiamen, China.

Justin R. Saunders grew up in Lahr, Germany, before moving back to Montreal in time for some high school shenanigans. Enjoying the finer things in life, a fervid aesthete, Saunders created the JJJJound photo blog in 2006.
