BERLIN — HVW8 Gallery Berlin in collaboration with One Love Books presents

THREE THE HARD WAY

WILFRED LIMONIOUS: IN FINE STYLE
ALEX BARTSCH: COVERS
MAXINE WALTERS: SERIOUS THINGS A GO HAPPEN

September 8th – October 14th, 2017
Opening Reception September 8th 18:00 – 22:00

In Fine Style: The Dancehall Art of Wilfred Limonious, is the first solo exhibition of work by prolific Jamaican illustrator Wilfred Limonious (1949–99) in Germany, and includes reproductions of work from the early 1970s through the mid-1990s, spanning three key phases in his career: his comic strips for the Jamaican newspapers, his illustrations for the publications of JAMAL (the Jamaican Movement for the Advancement of Literacy), and his distinctive artwork for the burgeoning dancehall scene coming out of 1980s Jamaica. The exhibition is curated by Al “Fingers” Newman and Christopher Bateman and is produced by One Love Books with the support of the Limonious Estate, to accompany their book, In Fine Style: The Dancehall Art of Wilfred Limonious, the first study into the artist’s life and work.

London-based photographer Alex Bartsch makes his debut at HVW8 Gallery Berlin with photographs from his book, Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London, forthcoming on One Love Books. After researching various reggae LPs and twelve-inches from his record collection, Bartsch has re-photographed fifty sleeves in their original London locations, holding them up at arm’s-length so that they blend in with their surroundings, decades later. Presented in this way, the photographs document the transition of time, with the album cover serving as a window into the past, juxtaposed against today’s backdrop. From an ethnomusicological perspective the photographs also provide a fascinating insight into the history of reggae music in London, inviting the viewer to rethink the relationship between the city and its musical heritage. The exhibition includes ten select prints from the project, featuring records by artists such as John Holt, Carroll Thompson, Peter Tosh, Moodie, Jah Woosh, Pat Kelly and Smiley Culture.

Serious Things a Go Happen features various original signs and posters from the early 1980s through today, drawn from the collection of Jamaican film and television producer and director Maxine Walters. Jamaican dancehall emerged out of reggae in the late 1970s and brought with it a new visual style characterized by bright colors and bold, hand-drawn lettering. One-of-a-kind, hand-painted posters advertising local parties and concerts have become a ubiquitous part of Jamaica’s landscape, nailed to poles and trees across the island. The exhibition in conjunction with Walters’ book Serious Things A Go Happen: Three Decades of Jamaican Dancehall Signs (Hat & Beard Press) presents an unofficial history of Jamaican dancehall music told through its graphic design.

EINHUNDERT – Diversity And Conformity – Berlin

15319273_10202289722440323_9079969719630513240_n

Einhundert teamed up with Native Teenage and a bunch of young talented local photographers to showcase a total of 100 sides to the city in a photo zine called ‘Diversity And Conformity’. 10 images by 10 artists – Einhundert views.

Join Native Teenage, adidas and us at HVW8 Gallery this Friday for our exhibition opening and Zine launch! Conplimentary drinks and food will be provided by Fechtner, plus Lee Stuart, Kristieyana and Nico Adomako on the Cdjs.

About the zine:
Diversity And Conformity. Two unstable magnitudes that bind a visual-driven culture. While the motivation on the concatenation of the following 100 pictures is to capture a indefinable collection of visual moments that have drawn the attention from 10 different individuals and photographers, the focus lies on the places they have been at the specific time this idea was born. By now this is Berlin.

Diversity and conformity. Effect or affect? How are you, the viewer, affected by what you see? What is the effect? Which image are you attracted to the most? What are you drawn to and why is this appealing to you?

Diversity and conformity. Subjective views turned into an objective analogue experience. Turn the pages, turn it around, close it, open it again and repeat. Its purpose is not to explain a process. It’s not to explain a cause. It’s a feeling that we try to envision, a feeling we try to evoke in the first instance and reproduce with each individual experience. Something tangible.

EINHUNDERT pictures. EINHUNDERT views.

Diversity And Conformity.

ALL INCLUSIVE – Group Show Berlin

unnamed

iGNANT magazine and HVW8 Gallery collaborate on a group exhibition with photographers from around the globe, playing with the subject “All Inclusive“. Sometimes critical, often sarcastic yet humorous, their works deal with vacationing and the stereotypical images that one might think of hearing the term “All Inclusive“. The artists reveal a shady side of maximum recreation on a cheap basis, showing us how tourists in uence the image of a city or landscape, or simply spark interest with an easy-going aesthetic. In a time where everyone is striving for ultimate fun and personal development, “All Inclusive“ is the analogy for our attitude of self-management and self-enhancement.

New interview with Lisa Leone on iGnant  :

Opening this week at HVW8 Gallery Berlin – an exhibition showing the work of Lisa Leone, a Bronx-born photographer and cinematographer that had organic relationships with some of hip-hop’s most influential artists.

From in-studio photos of Nas recording his first album ‘Illmatic’ to being on Snoop Dogg’s ‘Who Am I’ (What’s My Name) video set during a shootout between gangs in Long Beach. The artist was in the midst of the generation’s hit singles and music videos, making her known as the photographer whom photographed hip-hop’s history. We had the pleasure meeting Lisa at the gallery before the opening to get an exclusive insight on her work and stories…

HVW8 GALLERY BERLIN PRESENTS

HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW?

LISA LEONE’S ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHS IN FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION IN GERMANY

On view Thursday, October 6th through Saturday, November 12th

Opening Reception: Thursday Oct. 6th, 7pm–10pm

BERLIN — HVW8 Gallery Berlin presents How You Like Me Now?, a solo exhibition from photographer Lisa Leone. The show highlights the final period before hip-hop’s mainstream cultural influence and global expansion. These rarely exhibited photographs are both a documentation and personal exploration of the grit, audacity and raw creative spirit that has become the aesthetic of 80’s and 90’s hip-hop, its innovators, and the often harsh realism that fueled it.

Born in the Bronx and raised throughout New York City, Leone found herself in a unique position in the late 80’s to early 90’s to capture a behind-the-scenes perspective on the incomparable spirit of collaboration that sparked hip-hop’s early artistic triumphs.

“To see a young Nas in the studio with Q-Tip, Premier and Large Professor was not only inspiring, it is the decisive moment,” Leone recalls of the studio recording sessions of Nas’ landmark debut album Illmatic. Her photos from these recording sessions appear to be the only existing visual documentation of this iconic moment.

The exhibition is also a haunting portrait of the city itself, the setting for a diverse cast of characters trying to find acceptance, acknowledgment and community, captured at the tipping point between the devastation of the 70’s and the rebirth of the 90’s. Leone captures the spirit of an era when a city, fresh cultural voices, and a group of young artists all began to turn toward the future.

How You Like Me Now? captures nascent moments from the hip-hop generation’s biggest stars: Lauryn Hill, KRS-One, Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Nas, Biggie, Rosie Perez, The Roots, Queen Latifah, Snoop and many others.

The exhibition at HVW8 Gallery Berlin will feature unique presentations of these timeless images, giving viewers a rare glimpse to a time that will never be what it was.

Cody Hudson at HVW8 Berlin extended to March 26th

Cody Hudson ‘When I Finally Get Myself Together’ Now extended to March 26th at HVW8 Berlin.

Email info(at)hvw8.com for inquiries.

Chicago based artist Cody Hudson presents a new body of work in his first ever solo exhibition in Germany at HVW8 Gallery, Berlin.

After years of working on sculptures using a similar set of geometric shapes, this new body of paintings on linen takes those same simple bold shapes into painted forms.  For the first time, this language is brought concurrently into all parts of his practice. Starting with simple geometric shapes and slowly evolving into slightly more representational paintings to abstracted still lifes, the repetition of color and shapes starts to develop an internal dialogue. Titles of paintings such as “All One Or None,” “I Don’t Want To Die Alone” or “Post Post Still Life With Pots, Bong And Shell” loosely reference spirituality and/or false spirituality, 90’s rave music sub-genre ragga jungle, and overwhelming feelings of anxiety.

The show also includes a series of one color paintings from the “Shapes and Colors Dept.” painting series, which focuses on very simple one color combinations of shapes painted in an almost meditative state. At times these paintings take on a repetitive pattern feel while at others becoming almost floral.

A series of new steel sculptures will also be shown as well as four new screen prints produced by the art publisher Draw A Line based in Berlin.

Cody Hudson is a Chicago based artist, also known for his graphic design contributions under the name Struggle Inc. His graphic work and paintings have been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Japan including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), V1 (Copenhagen), Hellerau Art Center (Dresden) and Andrew Rafacz (Chicago).

Atiba Jefferson Interview

atiba-jefferson-interview-5

Interview with Atiba Jefferson by Chris Danforth.

I first heard the name Atiba Jefferson in relation to the skate scene in Los Angeles. Over the years, Jefferson has had access to a who’s who of not only skating, but music, sports, pop culture and more. Whether sitting in on a Henry Rollins photoshoot and quietly clicking the shutter through a long lens, or being commissioned to snap portraits of the Jumpman himself, Atiba has accumulated a wealth of experience during his tenure as a photographer and multi-creative. When speaking with Atiba, there was a lot to cover, as you can’t place his work into only one silo. In this sense, he seems to be a caricature of the modern creative; being well-versed in multiple creative mediums.

How did the HVW8 exhibition in Berlin come to fruition?

It came together at the last minute. I was in Berlin, working with Oakley on a new project, traveling with Sean Malto and Eric Koston, and they asked us to come over for a sales meeting. Tyler asked me to do it, and I was enthusiastic about the project, especially because I was already there.

So you knew him from LA?

Yeah, that’s the one gallery I show at in LA. So I’ve done a couple of shows at his gallery in LA and stuff like that.

Do you have other relationships with galleries like that in the States where you only want to show at one particular gallery?

I don’t regularly show my work but I do have a friend whose group show I’m always trying to be a part of. And then smaller stuff but I only started doing solo shows after I met Tyler.

What about the name of the exhibition? Could you explain that as well?

Titles are always a little bit tricky to come by. I’ve been listening to “So Long, Lonesome,” this Explosions in the Sky song. They’re an instrumental band – pretty big in the U.S. They’re one of my favorite bands actually. I saw them on their first tour in 2000 or 2001, and they were playing to some four people. Now they play huge festivals, in front of eight to ten thousand people at a time. The funny thing is, I was backstage at the Fuck Yeah festival in LA, and the dudes in the band were passing me. They called out to me because they knew who I was. I turned around and recognized them as well. After that we became really good friends.

I’m a big fan of the things that I shoot, I feel that all the people I shoot are not alone in their drive to do great things and they all are amazing individuals from all different walks of life. I’m lucky to photograph them. ”

‘Mon Amour’ Book Launch at HVW8 Berlin

HVW8

MON AMOUR is the 3rd and final book of the Ladies Collection, after JE T’ADORE and ENCORE.

The aim of the book is to collect the many faces of femininity and lady-ness as a tribute to womankind. With the acumen of a graphic designer and the passion of a 70’s erotic filmmaker, Jean André handles his women with curiosity, reverence and intuition.

André’s oeuvre combines mixed international pop culture with personal childhood references and swirls them into his work, using the female form as a sort of icing on the cake. The artist traces the roles of women from cultural icons to sexualzed bodies to intimate bodies, using his love of women as a lens to make his already private drawings more sensitive. “I make drawings of women for women, I don’t do this to turn boys on.” The meat of his work is contained within the active space of performance between muse and drawer.

All three books in the Ladies Collection are available for purchase at Colette Paris, www.Club75.fr and HVW8 Gallery. Published by Ed Banger, 50 pages black print

Jean André (b. 1986) describes his drawings and paintings as “gentleman art” focused and inspired by the beauty of women. His work as a graphic designer in Montmartre for Ed Banger is just one outlet, while his other work channels themes of the female form in charming paintings. At once minimalist and realistic, he tries to explore all the opportunities the ink offers him. His major influences include Tom Wesselmann, Matisse, Richard Kern and Serge Gainsbourg, among others.

HVW8 Art + Design Gallery was founded in 2006 by curator Tyler Gibney with Addison Liu in Los Angeles, California, with mandate supporting fine-art and avant-garde graphic design. Over the past seven years, emerging and established artists such as Parra, Geoff McFetridge, Kevin Lyons, Hassan Rahim, Mark Gonzales, Cody Hudson, Lisa Leone, Craig Costello (aka Krink), and Jean André have exhibited their works.
