HVW8 was born in Montréal, Quebec, in 1998 as a Bauhaus-inspired collective. Fresh out of Concordia University with a BFA in Design, Tyler Gibney was working from a studio just off St. Catherine St. and Rue St-Alexandre when he connected with artists Gene Pendon, Dan Buller, and a group of like-minded creatives. Together, they built HVW8 (Heavyweight Production House) — a collective blending painting, music, and design, a space where collaboration and experimentation could thrive.
From underground parties and music shows to posters, club flyers, videos, graffiti, art installations, and street-style campaigns, HVW8 tapped into a growing artistic community of producers, DJs, musicians, filmmakers, and other creatives.
For nearly 30 years, we’ve pushed the boundaries of art and design — from Montréal to Los Angeles, Berlin, and beyond. HVW8 is a 30-year art project in and of itself.
As HVW8 approaches its 30th milestone, we’ll look back with images and anecdotes highlighting past exhibitions, events, and projects that have shaped our journey.
