Two of my favorite designers from art school were Alexander Rodchenko and El Lissitzky.
They were part of the Construct movement of Russia in the early 1900’s. They rejected art for art’s sake, and put their art into a social context. Constructivism was the parent of the modernist movement that later developed at the bauhaus, and the great grandfather for a lot of what you see today. A huge influence.
