PAUSE IN YOUR FLIGHT — HVW8 BERLIN
HVW8 Gallery Berlin is pleased to present Pause in your flight, a collective exhibition which meditates on the shifting nature of memory and emotion over time. The selected works of five artists signify quests for understanding and connection, summoning scenes in which representation hesitates between the figurative and the abstract. Made hazy with the passage of time, realism becomes a peripheral concern as the artists relay cherished echoes of the past.
Collating the experimental observations of Johanna Dumet, Philipp Ernst, Maxime Fragnon, Natacha Mankowski and Andrej Ujhazy, Pause in your flight carries enduring questions of existentialism into new expressions of materiality and form. The artists update the aesthetic possibilities of the romantic, favouring instinctive feeling over conscious reasoning, as emblematized through Dumet’s vibrant series of tarot cards. Created in mixed- media on wood, her images are playful odes to the symbolic iconography of animals and nature. This connection with intuition also manifests in the oil on canvas works by Ernst, who develops his ideas instinctively during the painting process. Allowing gut feelings to drive his painterly impulses, the artist assembles fragments of color in thin layers or with a dry brush, maintaining the visibility of his previous decisions to preserve their significance.
A similarly candid use of medium is present in Ujhazy’s digital landscapes, which are tender in their simulated nature. Like visions from a dream-state, his two animations are looped on television screens, quietly meditating on the sublime escapism of digital exploration. In their seeming impossibility, Ujhazy’s landscapes share an inherent melancholia with Fragnon’s mixed-media ceramic installations, which comprise suspended canvases painted with dark natural pigments. Infused with found materials, his sculptural works gather the physical relics and sensory experiences of wandering the natural environment. Inhabiting a similar place between the tangible and imagined, Mankowski’s textured studies of southern Portuguese landscapes consider fantasized descriptions of nature. Her pigments and clays collected from the site are imbued with nostalgia as she reassembles her impression of a remembered place.
