GoTellMama!

The HVW8 Art + Design Gallery is proud to host a three day showing of  GoTellMama!, an exhibition in support of Barak Obama curated by Ray Noland. More info below.

Opening Reception: Friday, August 8th, 6 – 10 pm
Show Dates: August 8th – 10th.

The GoTellMama! Officially Unofficial Show is brought to you by artist Ray Noland aka CRO. The traveling art show is part of a two year long artists run and operated independent political art campaign in support of Barack Obama. It is focused on communicating with voters in an array of contemporary grassroots methods such as a national street campaign of posters and stencil art, animated viral videos, and creative use of internet technology.

GoTellMama! was created in November 2006 while Noland was recovering from a severe bicycle crash–jaw wired shut for six weeks and mending a dislocated shoulder. The Chicago-based artist devoured Senator Barack Obama’s book, ‘Dreams from my Father’ and became consumed with the man and his story, but also the potential of his [Obama’s] window into the 2008 election.

What began as the simple production of 25, pre-ordered, limited edition ‘Dream’ screen-printed posters has grown into a collection of prints, stencil graphics, fine art pieces, animated videos, an aggressive national street campaign and a series of art exhibitions across the country.

The ambition of the GoTellMama! campaign is to heighten awareness of Barack Obama using non-traditional tactics. GoTellMama! will be exhibiting the collection of screen-printed & offset posters, stencils on canvas, and original videos dating back to 2006.

10% of show sales donated to Obama for America.

Political Minded – Zimbabwe

Camo Wall

image dstrbo — Political Minded 2003

The Zimbabwe elections are in 2 days but it looks to be a sham. Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF are in a campaign of violence and reprisal attacks against the civilian population.  The Sokwanele website shows how much violence that has been going on in Zimbabwe (warning — some of the photos are not for the faint of heart!). Lucky we have free and (somewhat) fair elections — so use it and vote!

The Heavyweight Tradition

Ten years ago the original idea behind the a HVW8 composition/piece was to pay hommage to someone deserving in their field whether it was musically, such as Miles Davis, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Augutus Pablo; politically, like Shirin Ebadi, Noam Chomsky, Romeo Dallaire; a tribute to other artists, like Malike Sibyde and Mies van der Rohe; or just persons deserving of being called ‘heavyweights,’ like Richard Pryor and David Suzuki. HVW8 would take the iconography and sample it like a jazz standard and freestyle around it, building something to call our own and proud to represent.

You will not see a Paris Hilton, Marilyn Manson or any of these other ‘15 minute celebrity’ portraits, but you might just see a George Carlin sometime soon.

Whether its art or music there is enough crap out there that we don’t need to contribute, let time be the judge.

Respect is paid when due

dstrbo

“This piece is Ian Curtis, not so new, I did it in the fall, the worst live painting experience I’ve ever had. It’s the only time in 10 years I was prevented from finishing a piece. I had to add that yellow after, and I would have done a darker blue, but I kind of liked the simplicity and lightness of the whole piece, so I left it. I donated it for auction to an event here on the anniversary of his death called Grey Sunday, a tribute to Joy Division, and the proceeds were given to a suicide prevention hotline. I have no idea how much it went for, the event was kind of depressing so I left early.”
