Mark Gonzales in Paris

HVW8 Gallery is pleased to present “Mark Gonzales in Paris”, a new solo exhibition by Mark Gonzales. Marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in Paris, this is a homecoming of sorts for the artist and skateboarder who resided in the city in 2010. Gonzales’ new exhibition arrives just before an Olympic Games that will feature street skating (which he famously pioneered) and puts on display a new body of work made exclusively for this Paris pop-up. New paintings feature Gonzales’ signature ‘schmoo’ characters among a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes. The exhibition also features a fresh array of original drawings with a variety of new characters in various moods and scenes.

“Mark Gonzales in Paris” opens from 6-10pm on June 27th, 2024 and will remain on view through Saturday, July 6th, 2024. The artist will be in attendance for opening and signing copies of his eponymous Rizzoli book on June 28th.

Scrolls Book Release

Scrolls

“Scrolls” started at an airport about 9 years ago. Sven Barth began noticing that older men no longer had newspapers, they had phones. Entranced by these new devices they waited on their flights, completely oblivious to the outside world. And so, on every flight he took, he made it his mission to immortalize one of these older gentlemen. 7 years and dozens of flights later, Sven felt a book was the right way to collect this archive… and “Scrolls” was born.

In addition to the limited run of books, printed and bound by Sorella Studios, in Los Angeles, a selection of 20 of the original drawings grace the back walls of HVW8. They are framed by Sven himself with help from fellow frame maker and skateboarder, Josh Pall.

‘Paris De Noche’ World Premiere & Group Climate Listening Party

‘For the longest time I wanted to produce a skate video with an original soundtrack. Although not an entirely new idea, I wanted to try my hand at creating one myself. I believed in @n.rollings vision and execution in the way that he had always made skate videos and asked him if we should make one with our friends in which he obliged. We filmed extensively in NY, Philly, LA & Paris throughout 2023. This year was spent creating the music in which I am happy to finally announce with immense gratitude that @seedsofyaris and friends have provided the audio landscape for this project. Come join us this Tuesday at @hvw8gallery .’ – Sagen Lockhart

Berlin Photo Week – DEAD END STREET

Dear friends from Berlin! Tomorrow we are going to open “Dead End Street” exhibition together with @manuelosterholt at the @hvw8gallery from 6pm, Linienstrasse 161

HVW8 Gallery Berlin and Berlin Photo Week are pleased to present DEAD END STREET, a double pop-up photography exhibition featuring Nikita Teryoshin and Manuel Osterholt.

With the work “I‘ve never been to Russia“, which began in 2019 and shows Russia going astray, Teryoshin deals with his homeland, which is gradually slipping into fascism. Whether religious parades or Victory Day in the pouring rain with slogans like “We could repeat it!“ on the red square, studios of propaganda tv shows or the notorious “Pavlov‘s dog“ under museum glass in St.Petersburg, which stands for classical conditioning, Teryoshin is always looking for suitable motifs that describe his feeling towards the zeitgeist. However, an always critical photo-documentary examination leads to a dead end on February 24th, 2022. Teryoshin posts a picture of a burning Russian passport under the caption “Not in my Name“ and decides not to return to his homeland for the time being in protest against the war.

Keith Forever

Skateboarding legend and streetwear pioneer Keith Hufnagel passed away at age 46 this year following a battle with brain cancer. To pay tribute to the HUF Worldwide founder, who helped pave the way for sneaker and streetwear culture in the early 2000s, his brand has launched an exhibition in Los Angeles.

Entitled HUF FOREVER, the exhibition is available for public viewing at the HVW8 Gallery from Saturday, Oct. 31 until Nov. 8. Open 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. to the public daily with COVID-19 precautions in place, the showcases features photography from Ari Marcopolous, Giovanni Reda, Tobin Yelland, Atiba Jefferson, and more. There’s also a tribute video on display by RB Umali, and a mural from Remio.

HUF will also release a t-shirt paying tribute to the late skate icon. Designed by Cali Dewitt and James Rockin, the shirt will be available at the brand’s Los Angeles store and the online shop. All proceeds from the t-shirt, which retails for $40, will go towards the non-profit Phase One Foundation, which support cutting edge cancer research.

“Keith Hufnagel paved the way for all of us,” the brand added. “As a respect professional skateboarder, shop owner, brand founder, footwear and apparel designer, creative director, and industry leader. He showed us how to do it, and how to do it right. Keith’s legacy will continue to live on at HUF. Today, tomorrow, and forever.
