Selly Sy: Au Fil du Lin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Selly Sy: Au Fil du Lin

Opening Reception: May 22, 2026
On View Through: June 21, 2026

Selly Sy presents Au Fil du Lin, a series of staged photographs conceived as a unified body of work. Drawing from the different worlds that have shaped the artist, the series revives cultural traditions and reshapes them into contemporary, personal expressions.

Lace serves as both the thematic and visual thread connecting the work, a textile rooted in Sy’s earliest memories, a cherished traditional craft from her mother’s region in Normandy, and an ornament that evokes femininity, tradition, and the evolving experience of womanhood. By combining photography with fabric, Sy recalls the collages and layered magazine imagery she was drawn to as a child. The resulting works feel expansive and tactile, transforming photographs into dimensional objects intended to be experienced within an exhibition space rather than as flat images alone.

About the Artist

Selly Sy is a French American photographer living and working between Los Angeles and Dakar. Rooted in the tension and tenderness of two worlds, her practice explores questions of identity, culture, and diasporic experience, examining what it means to belong to multiple places at once. Through both commissioned and personal projects, Sy brings a considered eye to the spaces, faces, and stories that exist at the intersection of West African and Western culture.
