WALK THE NIGHT Unveils The Essence of Dance Life Through Pictures of Studio 54, Paradise Garage, and The Warehouse this Miami Art Week
Celebrating the artistry and diversity of contemporary photography,”WALK THE NIGHT – NIGHTLIFE AND CLUB CULTURE 1977′ – 1990’” is set to captivate audiences with a two-day immersive experience on Friday, December 8th and Saturday, December 9th of Miami Art Week, at Arlo Hotel Higher Ground.
This thoughtfully curated exhibit, promises to showcase the powerful narratives captured in iconic nightlife venues: Paradise Garage, The Warehouse, Studio 54, and The Music Box through the lens of three exceptional image makers. ‘For the longest time I wanted to produce a skate video with an original soundtrack. Although not an entirely new idea, I wanted to try my hand at creating one myself. I believed in @n.rollings vision and execution in the way that he had always made skate videos and asked him if we should make one with our friends in which he obliged. We filmed extensively in NY, Philly, LA & Paris throughout 2023. This year was spent creating the music in which I am happy to finally announce with immense gratitude that @seedsofyaris and friends have provided the audio landscape for this project. Come join us this Tuesday at @hvw8gallery .’ – Sagen Lockhart

The saga continues… Makin’ Paper goes Round 5! After the successful zinefests of the last years, Lodown Magazine and HVW8 Berlin Gallery is organising the sixth edition of the Makin’Paper Fair in cooperation with the designteam of adidas sportswear and the gentle people of EDWIN Jeans. As in previous years, zine makers of all couleur will have the opportunity to present their work at the zine fair. In addition to local exhibitors, regional, national and international zine makers will offer their work for sale.
Makin’Paper presents zine culture in a holistic view. The spectrum ranges from arty fanzines to political zines to music fanzines. In addition Lodown Magazine will open its archive and will show zines from the past 3 decades and even going back further in time. The will also be various prints for sale.
On Friday we start with a soft opening from 2 PM and hopefully we’ll go late. 3.- 5.11. 2023

Setting out on a meaningful journey to shine a light on an untold story, using the tools of mixed media shaped by photos, artifacts, collage, found footage, and video art. I use my work to connect with themes of human isolation and evolution to explore the complex story of nomadic assimilation. I focus on the scarcely recorded histories of indentured and indigenous communities with historical bonds to the West Indies. Uncovering their journey as a mirror to my own existence and a way to confront my struggles tied to growing issues of censorship, bigotry and oppression across the globe.

“… for each beginning bears a special magic that nurtures living and bestows protection.” Hermann Hesse
With the group exhibition THE NEW YESTERDAY, HVW8 Gallery Berlin celebrates new beginnings in challenging times.
The ever changing landscapes, physical and psychological, shifting to new manifestations. Resting for a singular moment, to transform into another the next. How does it feel to make this first step into thein that lies ahead and how do we reaco it, in a leap of faith. The artist is by nature repeating this process, with every new work. It becomes a part of the process.
Selected works from the artists’ most recent series are shown together for the first time. And we´re off to new beginnings.

OPENING
September 14, 2022, 6 – 9 pm
Exhibition Runs until October 29th.
HVW8 Gallery Berlin is pleased to present Angelus Novus, a group exhibition featuring the works of Amalia Vekri, Aristeidis Lappas, Elias Kafouros, Gregory Shimada, Jessica Williams, Joram Schön, Marley Van Peebles and Negashi Armada, with an opening reception on Wednesday September 14th.
In this exhibition we examine the work of a group of artists who are based in Athens, Berlin and Los Angeles, and who work primarily in figurative drawing and painting styles that explore cultural and personal spaces of imagination and reflection. The geographic specificity of the selection of artists in this exhibition serves as a means to represent the passing of time through the geographic space of the West.
The title of the exhibition, Angelus Novus is a reference to the mono print of the same name by Swiss / German artist Paul Klee. The artwork, which depicts an angel flying through space is often cited in the essays of German philosopher and art theorist Walter Benjamin and used as a metaphor to describe the passing of time.
“A Klee painting named Angelus Novus shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. “
-Walter Benjamin, Theses on the Philosophy of History
We find modern interpretations and ways to apply the metaphor of the Angelus Novus to our own respective place and time, as we follow the Angel of History through the present into the future.

Scrolls
“Scrolls” started at an airport about 9 years ago. Sven Barth began noticing that older men no longer had newspapers, they had phones. Entranced by these new devices they waited on their flights, completely oblivious to the outside world. And so, on every flight he took, he made it his mission to immortalize one of these older gentlemen. 7 years and dozens of flights later, Sven felt a book was the right way to collect this archive… and “Scrolls” was born.
In addition to the limited run of books, printed and bound by Sorella Studios, in Los Angeles, a selection of 20 of the original drawings grace the back walls of HVW8. They are framed by Sven himself with help from fellow frame maker and skateboarder, Josh Pall.
HVW8 L.A. is currently showing Fulton Leroy “Mr. Wash’s” Washington’s fundraising exhibition “Bridging the Way” which is helping to fund the building of his new studio and community center in Compton, CA. NBC News reports:
“Fulton Leroy Washington, who goes by Mr. Wash, knows a thing or two about getting a second chance in life even in the midst of hopelessness and isolation.
Before President Barack Obama commuted his sentence in 2016, Mr. Wash was behind bars for more than two decades. While serving a life sentence after being wrongfully convicted of nonviolent drug offenses in the 1970s, he taught himself how to draw and paint.
“I brought eight brushes and a couple of paint tubes and started practicing. And here we are now,” the Compton native recalled.”
“After commissioning his artwork, he was able to purchase his studio in Compton. And he’s now raising money to build a community center on the same lot with the goal of giving second chances to the formerly incarcerated and artists of color. The ex-inmate said the Art by Wash Center will also provide free housing of up to 6 months to those newly released from prison.
“This is my new blank canvass,” Mr. Wash described. “It’s going to have spaces for inmates coming home from prison and teaching art as a way of communication to prevent them from going [back] to prison.”
Mr. Wash also planned to host a fundraising exhibition with other artists of color whom he took under his wings.
The exhibition, which is curated by Mr. Wash himself, runs from Feb. 15 through Mar. 26 at HVW8 Gallery at 661 N. Spaulding Ave. in Los Angeles.”
