Gun America

Gun America by Tyler Gibney.

I was hoping to retire this image after our Political Minded series and the end of the Iraq war/George Bush era, but after the recent mass shootings in Colorado, Wisconsin and now this morning in New York City, I think it’s time for America to rethink it’s gun laws. Guns don’t kill people, but crazy people with guns do. In Japan there are virtually no gun deaths because there are no guns. Just something to think about.

Some HVW8 Political Minded bootleg shirts were spotted in a Bangkok. Political Minded was a series of artshows/ installations done by HVW8 artists Dan Buller, Gene Pendon and Tyler Gibney in Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, San Fransico and Munich from 2003 to 2006. The idea was to promote political awareness through art and music during the dark years of the Bush administration. HVW8 would take over a space and spend a week working while literally inhabiting the ‘guerilla gallery’, painting the walls with politically inspired murals. There would be an opening event with music and live t-shirt silkscreening. These (bootleg) t-shirts above are an example of the designs.

More information of HVW8’s in the gallery webite  HERE.

Art and Politics are tricky bedfellows, which is again demonstrated in the controversy over the role of the NEA and the promotion of policy objectives. The role of art in politics isn’t truly defined, but its presence is regularly invited and appreciated. HVW8 works to open dialogue and to include those in the conversation that will be impacted. We can only note that completely shutting the door rather than keeping that conversation open derides youth involvement.

(For the record we’re Canadian and don’t qualify for NEA funding).

These are the actual graphic layouts that Donald Rumsfeld would supply George Bush on his daily briefings before America’s crusade to war in Iraq.  Crazy!

Political Minded – Zimbabwe

Camo Wall

The Zimbabwe elections are in 2 days but it looks to be a sham. Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF are in a campaign of violence and reprisal attacks against the civilian population.  The Sokwanele website shows how much violence that has been going on in Zimbabwe (warning — some of the photos are not for the faint of heart!). Lucky we have free and (somewhat) fair elections — so use it and vote!
