Peter Beste – October 19th – Brave New Views

Square - Brave New Views (3)

HVW8 Gallery and NTS return with a new edition of Brave New Views this October, featuring an exhibition by photographer Peter Beste – ‘Defenders of the Faith’ – exploring the subcultural phenomenon of heavy metal fandom. The event will be accompanied by some suitably heavy DJ sets from Nuge, NTS resident Diamondstein and B2B set from Josh Anzano and Angry Andy. Free with RSVP: stop by HVW8 Los Angeles on Saturday 19th October from 7-10pm PST.

🗯 Photographer Peter Beste has been documenting subcultures for over 20 years. His fourth book, also titled Defenders of the Faith, is a photographic treatment of traditional heavy metal culture and dress code – distilled through fervor and time to an almost sacred object – the battle vest. Often referred to as a Kutten (German for monk’s robe), the vest has become a practice of identity. In Beste’s own words, “for many, it shows how “true” one is by how authentic their patches are, which festivals they have attended, or which bands you got to see way back when. It is an object that gains in value as it deteriorates, and is pretty much never bought or sold. You have to create your own.”

🔊 Don “The Nuge” Nguyen is a pro-skater for Baker Skateboards and played bass in Oklahoma garage band American Ruse.

🔊 Diamondstein is an NTS resident host best known for experimental, drone heavy electronic mixes, here showcasing his metal collection for Brave New Views.

🔊 Josh Anzano B2B Angry Andy – two local heavy metal scholars go head to head.

NTS X HVW8 – Brave New Waves

Square - Brave New Views
HVW8 Gallery and NTS present a new series exploring the relationship between art and music. Each installment of the series will feature an art exhibition & opening event together with musical performances for broadcast and artist interview podcasts.

The inaugural exhibit opens July 19th at HVW8 Los Angeles, featuring:

🗯 Ross Schwartzman, a.k.a Ross One’s installation exploring music consumption and identity via personal sound systems, comprising a wall of over 30 vintage boom boxes.

🗯 Charlie Ahearn‘s Doin’ Time In Times Square, a home movie “capturing the old capital of sleaze in all its pathetic glory”, filmed in part during the production of Ahearn’s classic 1983 hip hop film Wild Style.

🗯 LA filmmaker Calmatic and Steven Traylor‘s video and art installations, questioning the means of how we consume music, media, and technology – including their music video for Vince Staple’s FUN!, shot from the perspective of an interactive Google maps session.

The opening event will feature musical performances from Budgie & Battlecat as well as a DJ set from Ross One, recorded and streamed on NTS Radio platforms worldwide.

Kilo Kish ‘Fullfillment’ Video – HVW8 Gallery

Article from Vogue

Kilo Kish may be better known for wearing oversize suits than frilly dresses, but her new interactive video project for “Fulfillment,” a standout from last year’s Reflections in Real Time, proves that the rapper can pull off menswear staples and full-on gowns equally well.

Kish shared a new website designed by Empire Taste that allows the viewer to flip between four different security camera feeds of HVW8 gallery in Los Angeles. Each one depicts a different angle of Kish dancing and singing in a vintage pink gown, belted with a black ribbon that matches her long satiny gloves. HVW8 is currently housing an installation by Kish, who is also a visual artist. Of the video’s voyeuristic framing, Kish says that “watching security footage of someone alone in a big white box asks the question, ‘How do we find and define fulfillment in our digital society?’ ” So ponder the social behaviors of our current technological moment and admire Kish’s vintage pink gown by watching the clip below, or head to the website to take it in from every point of view.

PEOPLE: ERIN GARCIA

Interview with Erin D. Garcia from Monster Children

Aaron Farley sat down with California artist Erin Garcia to ask about his creative evolution, and his new exhibition, 5 Shapes In 6 Colors, which runs Aug 16th – September 14th. You’ve still got plenty of time to go check it out at HVW8 Gallery, 611 N. Spaulding, Los Angeles. Do yourself a favor and hop to it.

Interview and photography by Aaron Farley

AF: Talk us through the progression of murals that youve done.

EG: I think the first one was the standard vertical gallery, and the piece I did for the solo show at This Gallery, and then East of Western, and then The Ace, (Palm Springs), which was a huge leap.

Why was it a huge leap?

It was a huge leap because 1) it was multiple colors, and then 2) because it was massive. It was 50 feet by 2 stories. So before that the one at East of Western was the largest and that was 10 x 8 ft.

TORO y MOI at HVW8

Toro Y Moi and Red Bull Music Academy previously hosted special album listening events in Brooklyn, NY and San Francisco, CA. Now, fans in Los Angeles will be able to experience the same unique experience from December 14-16 at HVW8. At these events, fans have the opportunity to hear Toro Y Moi’s upcoming third album, Anything In Return, more than a month in advance of release. The event will feature 13 original drawings from Chaz Bundick on display, each paired with a corresponding song from the album that fans can listen to via Incase headphones. “I just wanted to do something fun for this album release,” says Bundick. Toro Y Moi will be DJing at the opening night on Friday, which will be 21+. The gallery viewings on Saturday and Sunday are 18+ and all days are free and open to the public.

About Toro Y Moi:

The product of a move from South Carolina to Berkeley, CA and the subsequent extended separation from loved ones, Toro Y Moi’s third full-length, Anything in Return, puts Chaz Bundick right in the middle of the producer/songwriter dichotomy that his first two albums established. There’s a pervasive sense of peace with his tendency to dabble in both sides of the modern music-making spectrum, and he sounds comfortable engaging in intuitive pop production and putting forth the impression of unmediated id. The producer’s hand is prominent- not least in the sampled “yeah”s and “uh”s that give the album a hip-hop-indebted confidence- and many of the songs feature the 4/4 beats and deftly employed effects usually associated with house music. Tracks like “High Living” and “Day One” show a considerably Californian influence, their languid funk redolent of a West Coast temperament, and elsewhere- not least on lead single, “So Many Details”- the record plays with darker atmospheres than we’re used to hearing from Toro Y Moi. Sounding quite assured in what some may call this songwriter’s return to producer-hood, Anything in Return is Bundick uninhibited by issues of genre, an album that feels like the artist’s essence.

Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Chaz Bundick has been toying with various musical projects since early adolescence. Having spent his formative years playing in punk and indie rock acts, his protean Toro Y Moi project has been his vessel for further musical exploration since 2001. During his time spent studying graphic design at the University of South Carolina, Chaz became increasingly focused on his solo work, incorporating electronics and allowing a wider range of influences- French house, Brian Wilson’s pop, 80s R&B, and Stones Throw hip-hop- to show up in his music. By the time he graduated in spring 2009, Chaz had refined his sound to something all his own. Music journals across the board touted his hazy recordings as the sound of the summer, and he released his debut album, Causers of This in early 2010.

Since then, Bundick has proven himself to be not just a prolific musician, but a diverse one as well, letting each successive release broaden the scope of the Toro Y Moi oeuvre. The funky psych-pop of 2011’s Underneath the Pine evinced an artist who could create similar atmospheres even without the aid of source material and drum machines. His Freaking Out EP, a handful of singles and remixes, and a retrospective box-set plot points all along the producer/songwriter spectrum in which he’s worked since his debut, and Anything In Return is another exciting offering that shows he’s still not ready to settle into any one genre.

VG 4TH ANNIVERSARY GUEST MIX N° 8:
HVW8 (TYLER GIBNEY)

Happy Birthday to us! It’s the 8th and final installment of Versions Galore’s 4th Anniversary Guest Cover Mix series…

HVW8, for the uninitiated, are an art collective made up of Gene Pendon, Tyler Gibney and Dan Buller who immoratlize their idols on canvas. Muhammad Ali, Fela, Stevie Wonder, Coxsonne Dodd, Serge Gainsbourg, Gil Scott Heron, Roy Ayers (to just scratch the surface) all get painted from a palette that is just as likely to include colors like funk, soul and afrobeat than just browns, oranges and blues. While they are in global demand, exhibiting anywhere from Parco (Tokyo) toStreetwise (London), HVW8 stay true to their musical roots by often painting in their natural environment; live music events. Indeed they can be found applying paint and pen soul alongside genre pushing luminaries like Bugz In The Attic, Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova and Roots Manuva. HVW8 are not afraid to share the limelight either. While hailing from Canada, they have established a firm base camp just off Melrose in Los Angeles in the form of the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery curating shows by the likes of Parra, Kevin Lyons, Ed Templeton, Geoff McFettridge and Michael Leon. And with that I’m excited and honored to pass today’s cover selector baton to HVW8′s Tyler Gibney.

Here is his mix:

VERSIONS GALORE 4TH ANNIVERSARY GUEST MIX N° 8:
HVW8 (TYLER GIBNEY)

And here is what he had to say:

Had a fun time pulling this together … and ended up with a lot or reggae versions. Always was a fan of Christine Lewis’s ‘Juicy Fruit’ along with Sly and Robbie covers. Tina Turner’s ‘Whole Lotta Love’ is a slept on version as is Grace Jones remake of Tom Petty’s ‘Breakdown’. So many great songs I didn’t include … could have went on an hour more!
Recorded it live at the HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles, Ca.

Fever – Susan Cadogan (Peggy Lee)
Whole Lotta Love – Tina Tuner (Led Zeppelin)
Light My Fire – Al Green (the Doors)
The Bed Too Big Without You – Shelia Hylton (the Police)
Southern Man – Merry Clayton (Neil Young)
Inner City Blues – Sly and Robbie (Marvin Gaye)
Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough – Derrick Laro & Trinity (Michael Jackson)

Juicy Fruit – Christine Lewis (Mtume)
Between The Sheets – Soul Clap (the Isley Brothers)
Come As You Are – Lil Roy (Nirvana)
You Belong To Me – Michael McDonald (I thought it was actually Carly Simon that recorded it first, but it was the Doobie Brothers in 1977)
Trans Europe Express – Senor Coconut (Kraftwerk)
Billie Jean – Sly and Robbie (Michael Jackson)
Light My Fire – Jose Feliciano (the Doors)
Breakdown – Grace Jones (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)

Hawthorne Headhunters ‘Myriad of Now’ Out Now.

A long time coming! The Hawthorne Headhunters ‘Myriad of Now’ is now available.

Thanks to everyone who made this project possible.

Born at the HVW8 Gallery  Hawthorne Headhunters, then featuring Black Spade, Coultrain, Proh Mic and I, Ced was created from the infamous ‘Live At The BBQ’ podcast series. Five years later the full length LP ‘Myriad of Now’ (with the current line up of Black Spade and Coultrain) is complete and was licensed to Plug Research  for distribution.

The album features artwork from HVW8 (thanks to Wazy for appearing on the album cover).

Please support independent art and music.

Myriad of Now – Hawthorne Headhunters

Hawthorne Headhunters ‘Myriad of Now’ E.P. Out now.

Support independant music!

In search of some new, Black Spade migrated out west to soak up the vibrant Southern California vibes and promptly met producer Proh Mic at the famed Do-Over. The two hit it off and began toying with music, soon bringing I,Ced, another St. Louis expat in LA, into the fold. The collective was taking shape and drew their moniker from ‘Ced’s residence in Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives reached out to their old comrade Coultrain and he eventually moved out to LA as well. A jam session at the HVW8 Gallery solidified the group’s identity and the creative relationship with it’s owner resulted in an eponymous EP in 2009. Made up of songs done with no intention of release, the EP was the first physical manifestation of Hawthorne Headhunters on HVW8 Records in 2009.

The creative process of the newly formed group was very natural. Members of the group liken the approach to that of old Jazz musicians; organic and instinctual, drawing from whatever influences they were feeling and writing about whatever was on their mind. ; They began plotting a full length record, but Proh Mic and Ced decided to pursue solo endeavors instead of focusing on the group and ‘Train and Spade became the official torch-bearers of Hawthorne Headhunters. The duo went in the studio and Myriad of Now was recorded, a 14-track collection of Funk, Electro, R and more that speaks on spirituality, sexuality and everything in between. Carrying on the lineage of Black music dating back to the Blues and the inception of Jazz, Hawthorne Headhunters melt influences together to break new ground.
